This presentation will showcase “low-floor/high-ceiling” problems that integrate students of all levels into math class. These problems are accessible to students from all levels (low-floor), are richly mathematical, and rigorous (high-ceiling). They offer students a way to tap back in to their intuitive mathematical ability. Goals include providing teaching strategies to engage students of all levels in non-routine tasks (focus on urban schools), discussing rubrics on CCSMP for teaching and assessing students, and share student reflections of learning in using non-routine problems. We hope attendees will gain an introduction to low-floor/high-ceiling math problems, methods for teaching and assessing CCSMP on non-routine problems, and opportunities to improve teaching through building number sense and algebraic reasoning.
